The beginning of ISA in Belgium

ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) was introduced in Belgium by a large-scale questionnaire in 1998 about "the possible creation of a carrying capacity on ISA". The aim of the questionnaire was to measure the behaviour and attitudes on speed, use of traffic accommodation, and to learn about opinions on measures of road safety and the acceptance of speed limits and ISA.

Also a first vehicle equipped with ISA ("active accelerator pedal") was introduced in Belgium: A lot of different types of demonstration meetings were organised and given for the public opinion and decision makers. According to these demonstration meetings and research, ISA became well known, so the possibility was made to organise a first ISA-trial in Belgium.

On October, the 26th in 2002, the first ISA-trial in Belgium started in Ghent, in association with the Belgium Institute for Road Safety, the City of Ghent, an insurance company, the provincial administration, Volvo-cars Ghent and the regional public transport company. The project ended in December 2003.
